Any known good alternatives?

I have access to AMD64 hardware and can try to reproduce the problem
you have described.  What version of FreeBSD are you using?

I'm quite surprised to hear GDB doesn't compile on FreeBSD/AMD64,
considering its Tier-1 status.  Have you tried building any of the GDB
versions in /usr/ports?
